Breast Pump Settings Explained: Modes, Suction & Controls

The Two Phases: Stimulation vs. Expression

Most electric pumps have two phases that mimic the rhythm a baby uses at the breast — a quick, light start, then a slower, stronger draw. On the pump these are:

The stimulation phase is also called letdown mode or massage mode (some pumps show wavy "bacon" lines on the button). Cycle Speed vs. Suction Strength

This is the distinction that clears up most confusion, because they're two separate things:

  • Suction strength (vacuum) — how hard the pump pulls on each cycle. This is the setting you'll adjust most.
  • Cycle speed — how fast the pump pulls, measured in cycles per minute (cpm). A cpm of 54 means it pulls 54 times a minute.

Here's the catch: not every pump lets you control both. Some pumps (Spectra is the classic example) give you independent control of cycle speed and suction. Many others pre-set the cycle speed for each suction level or each mode, so the single dial you see actually changes a programmed combination of both. There's no single "correct" cycle speed, and because the levels differ from pump to pump, it's worth taking it slow when you're learning a new one.

As a rule, pre-set pumps are simpler and more intuitive, while pumps that let you adjust cycle speed independently have a bit more of a learning curve but give you finer control. Neither is better — it comes down to how much you want to fine-tune the dials yourself versus letting the pump decide for you.

Suction (Vacuum) Levels: How to Set Them

Suction is the setting people most often get wrong by assuming higher is better. It isn't. The mechanical rule of thumb every manufacturer echoes:

  • Increase the suction gradually until it just starts to feel slightly uncomfortable.
  • Then back it down a notch, so it's strong but comfortable. This is your "maximum comfortable vacuum."
  • Never push suction to the point of pain — that's a signal to turn it down, not power through.

Higher isn't better — if it hurts, turn it down. Persistent discomfort even at a comfortable level often points to flange fit rather than the dial, and pumping that's painful at any level is worth raising with an IBCLC.

The exact layout varies, but most pumps have some mix of these:

  • Power — turns the pump on and off.
  • Mode / phase toggle — switches between stimulation and expression. Many pumps mark these with icons: a hand for stimulation and a bottle for expression.
  • Let-down button — on some pumps, a dedicated button (often a droplet) to jump between phase 1 and phase 2.
  • Suction + / − — raises or lowers vacuum strength.
  • Cycle speed + / − — raises or lowers cycles per minute (only on pumps that allow it).
  • Pause — temporarily stops suction without ending the session.
  • Timer / display — shows elapsed time and current settings; some have an LED backlight you can toggle.
  • Sync / independent sides — on double and wearable pumps, runs both sides together or lets you set each separately.

Settings on Different Pump Types

How you reach those controls depends on the kind of pump:

  • Manual pumps have no electronics — you are the settings. Your hand speed sets the cycle and your squeeze sets the strength, so you naturally pump faster and lighter at first, then slower and stronger.
  • Traditional electric pumps use physical buttons or a dial on the motor unit to change mode, suction, and (sometimes) speed.
  • Wearable and app-controlled pumps put the same controls in your bra and on your phone — tap to switch modes, adjust suction, toggle sync between sides, and save your preferred settings in the app.

Some pumps also pre-program the whole thing. How to Operate the Pump, Step by Step

Putting it together, a typical session runs like this:

  1. Assemble and position the pump, with the flange centered and sealed, then power it on.
  2. Start in stimulation mode — fast, light cycles. (Some pumps begin here automatically.)
  3. Switch to expression once milk is flowing, using the mode/phase or let-down button — or let an automatic 2-phase pump switch for you.
  4. Adjust suction to your maximum comfortable level, backing off if it's ever uncomfortable.
  5. Re-trigger if flow slows: on most pumps you can tap back to stimulation for a minute, then return to expression. Some pumps can't — check yours.
  6. Finish: pause or power off, then break the seal before removing the flange.
