The Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump Review

Product Description:

The Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump (see it here) is designed to be convenient, comfortable, and effective. This manual breast pump offers a SoftFit breast shield intended to give you maximum comfort, as well as a contoured, swiveling ergonomic handle that fits perfectly in your hand, and positions to any angle. With its two-phase expression technology, the Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump offers an advanced pumping pattern. With two modes, stimulation mode, and the expression mode, this manual breast pump mirrors a baby’s natural rhythmic sucking, beginning first with rapid sucking to stimulate the flow of milk, and then slowing down to a deeper sucking that will express milk more efficiently.

The Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump also offers fewer pieces, in other words, it’s easier to clean than most manual breast pumps. Plus, all of the parts that come in contact with Mom’s milk are 100% DPA/DEHP free. In addition, the Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump comes with one container stand, two 5-ounce Medela containers with two lids, a breastfeeding information guide, and instruction manual, as well as a 30-day limited warranty.

Features Include:

  • Contoured, ergonomic handle that also swivels

  • 100% DPA/DEHP free

Reviews:

As far as reviews go, the Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump did really well. About 78% were extremely happy with their Medela Manual Breast Pump, stating that it was quiet, gentle, and effective. Most loved the ergonomic swiveling handle, and breast shield, stating that is was extremely comfortable to use for long periods of time. Most also loved the fact that there are minimal parts to clean, and that it offers two modes of pumping. Several reviewers raved that they were able to pump a good 4 to 6 ounces in 10 to 15 minutes, which is really not bad for a manual breast pump. As far as the negative feedback goes, there were a few complaints that the bottle leaks if it gets tipped over, and although it says that it’s dishwasher safe, a few reviewers ended up with warped breast shields. Another reviewer commented that if you don’t have all the parts put back just perfect, you will lose suction. Other than that, aside from a few defective pumps that were sent back and replaced by Medela, rather quickly I might add, most seemed really satisfied.

All in all, I’d say that the Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump is a great buy. The cost is minimal, and it seems to get the job done. So, if you need a manual breast pump to either empty your breasts after a feeding, relieve occasional engorgement, use as a backup or for traveling, then I think this one is perfect! But, if you’re looking to establish your milk, or need to stock up on your supply before you go back to work, I would recommend an electric double breast pump instead, for serious pumping.

The Good
  • Extremely affordable
  • Minimal parts for cleaning
  • Ergonomic swiveling handle
  • 2 modes of pumping, expression and stimulation
  • SoftFit breast shield provides gentle comfort
  • Lightweight and super quiet
  • It’s great for traveling
The Bad
  • Container leaks if it tips over
  • Must be set up perfect or it will lose suction
  • Can’t put the breast shield in the dishwasher or it will warp
  • Not intended for “serious” pumping
